Elizabeth O'Connor (R) is seeking office for the Commissioners of St Mary's County, District 3. (Charlotte Hall, Mechanicsville, Golden Beach, and the Seventh District). She was raised in Charles County and has resided in St Mary's County for over 20 Years. She currently lives in Mechanicsville with her husband, John, and son John Edward II.
Elizabeth graduated from Southern Maryland Christian Academy. After graduating from High School, she earned her associate's degree from the College of Southern Maryland and is pursuing her Bachelor's degree with the University of Maryland Global Campus.
Elizabeth is a decorated, retired law enforcement officer. She has served with the St Mary's County Sheriff's Office since 2000. She quickly earned a reputation as a dedicated public servant. Elizabeth led the way for female officers that came behind her by breaking glass ceilings. She was the first female K9 Handler and Dive Team member in the nation's oldest Sheriff's Department.
Her family's public service includes her sister, a nurse, her mother, and her father were teachers. Many of Elizabeth's family have also served in the United States Armed Forces.
O'Connor is known in the horse community as the owner and rider of Bugsy, the underdog, a one-eyed horse who went to the top of the Dressage Grand Prix. This Cinderella story has been told in several national and international horse publications. She is known for her big heart for helping people, her family, and animals.
O'Connor is well known for her work ethic, integrity, and honesty, and she never runs away from hard work. She sought out the impossible situations and found answers and solutions. She has routinely demonstrated the ability to make the right decisions regardless of how tough they may be. Her hard work, willingness to serve others, integrity, and honesty will continue to be visible when elected as a County Commissioner. Elizabeth is asking for your vote on Election Day.
Elizabeth is strongly opposed to tax hikes or burdensome fees. She will actively seek out wasteful government spending and formulate strategies to deliver exceptional citizen-centric services using existing funds.
St. Mary's County remains one of the fastest growing counties in the State of Maryland. Ensuring growth is properly placed, met with adequate public infrastructure, public safety resources, and conforms with existing laws as well as citizen input are extremely important to her.
Elizabeth witnessed firsthand the tremendous impact crime has on victims and citizens during her lengthy career in public safety. She will support adequate funding for the Sheriff’s Office and help establish programs to empower victims, citizens, combat violence, and address the root causes of crime.
Elizabeth shares many of the same concerns of other residents about recreation and parks in the County. Ensuring the services provided keep up with the growing demands and needs of the citizens is a top priority. The county has made great strides in enhancing it's recreational activities, fields, and parks however there is so much more to be done.
Elizabeth believes every child deserves a high-quality education in a safe and secure learning environment with parental involvement. She will actively support funding for school safety, competitive wages for teachers as well as school bus drivers.
Elizabeth shares many of the same concerns of other residents about traffic congestion and roadway safety. She will foster strong partnerships with the Department of Public Works and State Highway Administration to alleviate problems associated with roadway construction, failing infrastructures, engineering, and traffic signal timing.
Elizabeth is a proponent of efficient and transparent government. She will battle to reduce overburdensome fees, curb government overregulation, ease bureaucratic processes, and ensure public access to records, and fight back against government corruption.
Elizabeth in invested in making sure the needs of St. Mary's youngest citizen to it's senior population are met through existing services provided by St. Mary's County. Elizabeth will support innovative programs that remain cost effective while providing excellent service.
